Family Information and FOPHS News Friday 17th January 2025
Welcome to 51Ƶ School's Family Liaison Blog
17.01.25
I hope that your children/young people have settled back to school life.
I am sure that you, like school staff were pleased to read the Ofsted report sent home this week. This has just been updated on the Ofsted site, but here is the link if you would like to check and, especially if new to school want to read previous reports. It is a privilege to work in a school which has, in my time here always been judged “outstanding”. As a parent I knew my son received the best care and education here too.
Thanks to all who completed the Ofsted Parent View; that too was very positive. At this stage, had we not had an inspection I would be circulating Ofsted parent View and asking you to complete it.
Important: HMRC has sent us information on benefits which could make a difference to families. Please scroll to the Information section for more.
FoPHS AGM: Tuesday 21st January 9.30-11 we have our AGM. Please come along and see what we do. All parents, carers and staff are members by default. This is an opportunity to hear the Chair & Treasurer reports, see the 100 club draws and be part of a group which wants to make a difference to your children/young people’s school lives.
Yesterday I accompanied two of our Post 16 students who took some new fund-raising staff on a tour of school. It is important that those who support us know what a difference it makes. The students were fantastic, and feedback was wonderful. Thanks to Jospeh and Jack who were a credit to school.
Online Safety
The link to the Online safety information can be found on the school website under the heading “Parent and carers area”, then “online safety” from the dropdown menu.
This week’s online safety blog is live:
Children are drawn to a diverse range of video games, many of which involve spooky characters designed to thrill and entertain. One popular game series that has captured the imagination of children is “Five Nights at Freddy’s.” As engaging as these games might be, it’s essential to ensure your child’s online safety and well-being. Here’s what you need to know about these games and how to keep your child safe while playing them.
Transitions
I thought the following information from IPSEA (Independent Provider of Special Needs Advice) would be helpful to parents/carers.
You will find that, as your child approaches 16 years the annual review will be held in the Autumn term. This is so that deadlines for decisions regarding progression can be made by the 31st March. This also supports transition if the young person is moving on to college or other provision.
My advice is to be prepared. This means thinking ahead; is there a chance that your Local Authority will suggest a different school or college or move to cease the EHCP? This is a concern for all, but especially those who live further from school. Look at your Local Offer and what’s available. Check the website, visit if possible, to see if you think it can meet needs. Most of the parents I have spoken to agree that you get a feel for a place. You know your child best, so does the current school.
Here is what IPSEA says:
“Moving to a new phase of education with an EHC plan?
At this time of year, many families reach out to us for advice about their child’s move from one phase of education to another – whether it’s nursery to primary, primary to secondary, or beyond.
If your child has an EHC plan, your local authority has a legal duty to review and amend the plan when your child moves between particular stages of education.
The deadlines for when your child’s EHC plan must be reviewed and amended are:
31 March for those moving from secondary school to a post-16 institution
15 February for all other phases of transfer
These deadlines are statutory, not optional.
For further guidance on this topic, take a look at our resources on annual reviews, including template letters to help you take action when your local authority is not complying with the law”
Northumberland Skills
This is transition related too.
We have been asked to share information on an open day and taster events for students with Special Educational Needs. I am aware of the location, but it may be of interest to some.
Please see information below.
HMRC Information
We received the following information this week.
Don’t miss out on child benefits.
We want to make sure parents and carers are getting all the support they’re entitled to, so we’re getting in touch with some important information on Child Benefit.
In April 2024, the amount people can earn before they start paying the increased to £60,000.
For parents and carers who have not yet claimed Child Benefit, or who opted out of payments and have income between £60,000 and £80,000, it can now be financially worth theirwhile to claim. The easiest way to do this is on the or .
We’d really appreciate your help in sharing this information with families, so we’ve attached a handy toolkit with content ready to share on your channels.
We’ve also included some messages to help parents and carers access their proof of entitlement online or on the app, which may be useful when applying for school places.
We’d love to know if you were able to share these messages with your networks, so please get in touch and confirm if you do.
Thank you for helping us to make sure families get the financial support they need.
