Makaton sign for poem and poet for National Poetry Day yesterday
Hi everyone
How are you all?
We鈥檙e at the end of our fifth week and we鈥檙e very busy, as you can see below! There鈥檚 a huge amount going on, with Harvest Festivals, Resilience Days, Poetry Days and much more besides. There are some great STARS from lessons and therapy, and brilliant personal and physical development things too, as well as good stuff from Makaton, Safeguarding and Wellbeing
Please do look at Eileen鈥檚 and Joel鈥檚 blogs this week as well as there are some very important things in those 鈥 and there are always the rest of the school blog or even the Foundatron one if you still want more
Thanks for all your support, whether it鈥檚 coming up here for coffee mornings, talking to Eileen, Aylisha or teachers and therapists, or just supporting us by helping to get your son or daughter into school so we can be with them each day
Have a lovely weekend. It鈥檚 warm and sunny as I type this, so hopefully it will be for the next two days as well!!! Yes? Well, hopefully (I鈥檓 from Cornwall you know so I鈥檓 optimistic about the weather!)
All the best, take care and see you soon

We have 3 Super-Steering Groups which deliver our Key Drivers through our curriculum. The Key Drivers are Communication, Wellbeing and Independence. The Groups are Literacy, Physical Development and Personal Development.
Literacy
Becky, our Literacy Lead, leads a team that improve all aspects of literacy, including this year a lot of handwriting and oracy (it鈥檚 OK, she鈥檒l be going into explain all of that) as well as reading, phonics, books and all sorts! Here鈥檚 Sarah with the latest on National Poetry Day!
National Poetry Day Thursday
This year National Poetry Day 2024 is celebrated on听Thursday 3 October. Each year has a theme, this year is 鈥榗ounting鈥.听 Poems can come in all different shapes and sizes, from raps and songs to Haikus and free verse and can be a powerful way to communicate.
This week we have looked at our school鈥檚 name, classes have thought about life at 51视频, then have generated words and phrases. Using the words and phrases, we have then compiled an amazing acrostic poem. On Thursday, classes have enjoyed reading, listening and sharing our whole school poem.

Physical Development
Everything that is fabulous in the world of Physical Development! This includes physio, hydro, MOVE, PE, HI, VI, a lot of OT and all sorts of key areas for us, including all of the Outdoor Learning, John Muir Award and many other aspects. Steph oversees this and will ensure that an aspect is shared in the blog each week. This week: Mary and the Hellens Sensory Motor Suite!
Look at the fantastic set up of Mary鈥檚 motor sensory session in the Hellens Motor Sensory Suite. Here it is looking all neat and tidy, before some of our KS4 Accreditation children were able to have fun practising and developing their fine and gross motor skills!
This is a great example of how our therapists can provide engaging, fun and exploratory therapy interventions. Students attending this group also have an opportunity to access the trampoline to develop their physical skills which is of course most people鈥檚 favourite bit of the session!
Awesome work, we鈥檙e very lucky to have such human and physical resources! Love the Sensory Motor Suite! Cheers to all involved!
Personal Development
One of the best things about the school and one of the most important for our pupils, PD covers PSHE, Wellbeing, Careers, Social Moral Spiritual & Cultural, Online Safety, Behaviour and similar areas. Jo pulls it all together. Let鈥檚 see what Jo and the team have in store for us this week
Harvest Festival
3BE have been learning about Harvest Festival this week. We went to the shops to buy the ingredients and then made bread. We enjoyed exploring the ingredients and using the flour to practise mark making. We took it in turns to stir the dough and then had a go at kneading the bread. We are going to feed the birds with our bread.
听While we were at the shops we also chose a tin of food to bring back to school to donate to The People鈥檚 Kitchen.
In 4JH we have discussed acts of kindness where a small act of kindness could mean a lot to another person or group of people. This linked with the topic of Harvest Festival to show how others contribute and help the wider community or other people.
World Habitat Day
In celebration of the upcoming听鈥榃orld Habitat Day鈥櫶(Monday 7th听Oct) the animal lovers in 3KH have been thinking about all the different environments that animals from around the world thrive in.
Whether it鈥檚 lions and tigers or bears (or iguanas and wolves), we have been sharing our ideas on what makes their home the best place to live.
We even went outside into our outdoor learning areas to see if we could spot some very small animals (minibeasts) in their ideal environment.
The Magpies of 3KH hope that you enjoy your weekend in your happy habitat, whatever that may be!
Harvest Festival
Here鈥檚 Nat
Harvest Festival 2024
This year for the Harvest Festival, 51视频 is going to be supporting The People鈥檚 Kitchen in Newcastle. The People鈥檚 Kitchen work hard to support homeless and vulnerable people and help fight hunger. To do our bit and help too, we will collect as many donations as possible over the coming weeks. If you鈥檙e in the position to help, please check out The People鈥檚 Kitchen鈥檚 鈥楬arvest Wish List鈥 of items that are particularly useful and send your donations in to school.
There’s a link below to The People鈥檚 Kitchen website, where you can find more information on the fantastic work they carry out.听听
Thank you for all your support, and of course, Happy Harvest!
Wellbeing!
Our school鈥檚 Wellbeing Theme for this year is all about 鈥楥onnect鈥 鈥 and connect is one of the five ways to Wellbeing!
This week, we set the challenge: 鈥楥onnect with each other.鈥 Staff and students were invited to share something about themselves that others might not know, and it鈥檚 been wonderful to see so many people jumping into the Connect Challenge again! It’s great to hear how classes are using this opportunity to really get to know each other.
A special shoutout goes to the amazing pupils in 4JH, who shared their dream jobs during their Employability lesson. It was a blast hearing about their aspirations! And let鈥檚 not forget the staff who revealed some of their past jobs too 鈥 like Joel, our marvellous Marks & Spencer sales assistant, and Rebecca Fletcher, the fabulous Butlin鈥檚 Redcoat! Who鈥檇 have thought it?
Thanks for making connections with each other this week!
Next week鈥檚 challenge is all about听鈥淐onnecting with nature.鈥 We can鈥檛 wait to see how creative you get with this one!
Feel free to send any photos or comments to Andy at听a.dawson@percyhedley.org.uk听Let鈥檚 keep the fun going!
Behaviour for Learning (BfL)
Behaviour for Learning (BfL) is a new team within our school setting, behaviour can overlap with Safeguarding and Mental Health, however, we thought it would be best to have a standalone team that can work along side other teams within the school.
BfL is an approach to understanding and developing children and young people鈥檚 behaviour that focuses on their relationship with their self, with others and with the curriculum, and promotes readiness for education.
The team is made up of:
- Class Teacher/ NAPPI Trainer – Andy Hall
- Wellbeing Counsellor/ Deputy DSL – Corin Orr
- Safeguarding Officer/NAPPI Trainer – Aylisha Holland
Together the BfL team will be supporting staff and pupils in our setting.听 The BfL approach is consistent with our values and compatible with systems such as Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and Non-Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention (NAPPI).
More updates from the BfL team to come!
Resilience Day
And here鈥檚 Nat again!
On Thursday 10th October, 51视频 School will be taking part in a Resilience Day focusing on mental health and supporting 鈥楬ello Yellow Day鈥. We will be participating in a variety of activities set up to encourage mindfulness and positive energy. Some of the activities may be a little bit messy 鈥 so if it鈥檚 possible, please wear older clothing that you don鈥檛 mind getting dirty. We are asking for a voluntary donation of 拢1 per student who come to school in yellow (or their chosen outfit to make them happy) and the funds donated will be going to YoungMinds.
Here is a link to find out more information about Hello Yellow Day and YoungMinds:
Welcome to Early Years!
Here's Kerry!
This week in Early Years with have focused on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. In the outdoor learning area, we were joined by the 3 bears, who enjoyed the fabulous porridge we made. Our sensory story enabled us to explore different textures and smells. We painted some great bears. We also enjoyed mindful meditation each day where we relax and recharge for the afternoon with lights, explored treasure baskets and our interactive floor. Once again a busy week in Early Years
Beautiful from stuff from Early Years and Goldilocks there!
Therapy Star of the Week! Love Therapy Star of the Week, especially when it鈥檚 Olivia!
This week's Therapy Star of the Week is Olivia! Let鈥檚 hear from Sophie!
Olivia is always happy to get involved during Occupational Therapy sessions with a smile on her face. As part of a life skills session, she has been researching, planning and preparing for the skills/resources needed for cooking 鈥榝unny face foods鈥. Olivia鈥檚 idea is a 鈥楽pooky pizza鈥, she will have to put all of her cooking, fine motor and organisation skills to use to make her pizza. This week, after researching the idea, Olivia began designing what her pizza will look like.
Well done Olivia!
Hungry AND scared! Spooky Pizza!
Safeguarding Updates 鈥 anaphylaxis and other allergies
Aylisha is our Safeguarding Officer, Rebecca is the DSL, and Tracy, Corin round out a great DSL Team, with Carla as well; other colleagues look at other aspects too. For the blog, they give us weekly updates, which cover a range of topics 鈥 some of them pretty heavy sometimes! Here鈥檚 Rebecca
This week is National Anaphylaxis Awareness week.听 Due to this we have been thinking about our procedures in school to ensure that we have the safest environment for all of our pupils and staff and ensure that our systems are as up to date as they can be for all staff to access.
We would like to complete a yearly update of all allergens and intolerances in our staff and students as we are aware how quickly they can change, adapt and add to.听 As part of this we would like you to complete a short questionnaire for our records to update our central data base for all staff in school to have access to.听 We realise you may have provided this information before; however, we would like to do a full update to our systems so would appreciate your time with this.听 More information about the fourteen main allergen groups can be found at the link below.听
If you need any help or support please contact your class team, the DSL team or our Family Liaison Eileen to complete this with you. We would appreciate having the information for next Friday the 11th October.
Please use the link or the QR code to complete this.
If you would like some more information about this please contact the team, or access the online safety page on our school website where you can find lots of information about staying safe online, parental guides and our policies
Please click the link below which shows our acceptable use policy.听 The student friendly versions are in the appendix should you wish to
Feel free to get in touch with us if there is anything you wish to discuss
Everyone and anyone is always very welcome and actively encouraged to contact Aylisha at 听aylisha.holland@percyhedley.org.uk or Rebecca at R.Fletcher@percyhedley.org.uk or any of the DSL Team
Online Safety
This week Joel says...
Video games have become a popular pastime for children and teenagers. While they can offer entertainment and even educational benefits, it’s crucial to be mindful of online safety and the potential influence games can have on young minds.
Please do tell us what you feel would be helpful in the Online Safety blog
Exams with Kat!
Hello. Welcome to the new academic year! As we start to collate and prepare for a new exams鈥 series, I would like to look back at the last series
It was indeed a busy year regarding registrations, entries, forms to be filled in, deadlines to meet and the actual run of all exams on the exam days for varies qualifications
All students worked so hard and results on results day proofed that this hard work paid off
We had all 鈥榩asses鈥 and exceeded estimated grades! We are very proud of all past and current students who achieved such good results
Now we are focusing on collating new details and updating documents and policies 鈥 which soon will be also up to date on our school website
All new JCQ Regulations must be read, and additions must be implemented to our run of exams to adhere to JCQ Regulations and Inspections
We look forward to working with you this year. All best wishes

Attendance Matters!
A Government update to permissions this week!
We鈥檙e committed to promoting high attendance among our students which was a key focus highlighted in our latest Ofsted report. I鈥檝e put an extract from that below
Ofsted has emphasised nationally across all schools whether mainstream or SEND the importance consistent attendance plays in academic success and overall student wellbeing
As all our parents and carers will know, we have over the last year through our new attendance policy and our weekly blog, highlighted our commitment to improving attendance.
We thank you for your continued support
Update: Just to make everyone aware of an update when requesting leave for a student. From September 2024 when leave is requested for any medical appointments that an appointment letter/message must be seen either physically or via email alongside the Absence Request Form. This comes as an update Under the Keeping Children Safe in Education Act – September 2024. Leave cannot be granted without this evidence

Here鈥檚 a link to our Code of Conduct, which is also on the website in the 听Parent and Carers Area – 51视频 School鈥. Most schools have these now, so please do have a read 鈥 they aren鈥檛 used very often

Oh, and why don鈥檛 you join them! The Fabulous Friends are always looking for volunteers for events! If you can offer any support, please contact Eileen at e.robinson@percyhedley.org.uk

Makaton Signs of the Week with Julie!
Every Sunday Julie prepares a message for all classes on Makaton signs that are current and relevant to the time of year. I generally reproduce them here so those at home can do the same thing if you want to and if it works for you 鈥 or just for you to learn a few signs each week. Hope it works for you!

Question words #2
Ask, how, how are you, how many, how much, how old
Remember that signing our spoken questions can make a difference to our students鈥 understanding.
Here are the signs:
Keeeeeeeeeeeep signing!
And finally, this is from Rebecca
Thank you to everyone who attended the Upper School and Post 16 Macmillan coffee afternoons, it was lovely to see parents and families in school and allowing them the chance to meet staff and key people in school who can support them.
We raised 拢54.80 for the charity which has been sent through to support Macmillan with their work.
